VeDPH Welcomes Visiting Scholars Fabrizio Nevola and James Coleman

The Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities (VeDPH) at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice is pleased to welcome Fabrizio Nevola and James Coleman as Visiting Scholars during the spring semester of 2026. Both scholars are recipients of a Giles Constable Award from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, supporting research projects focused on the culture and history of the Italian Renaissance.

Fabrizio Nevola is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture and Co-director of Digital Humanities at the University of Exeter. His research explores urban history, visual culture and digital approaches to public history. During his stay in Venice he is developing the project Hidden Venice: microhistories of architecture around San Francesco della Vigna, which expands the HistoryCity app with a new walking trail focused on the architectural and social history of the area. The project uses geolocated storytelling and digital tools to explore the microhistory of urban spaces and the networks of actors involved in their construction.

James Coleman is Associate Professor of Italian at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on Italian literature between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. His current project, Reading Archipelagos: Italian Humanism and Early Modern Books of Islands, examines the cultural and intellectual significance of early modern “books of islands”. In both his research and teaching he employs digital approaches, with particular interests in network analysis and mapping tools.

Together, their work highlights how digital methodologies can open new perspectives on the study of Renaissance culture, literature and urban space.
