Abstract
Based on old practices, public history is an overall change of paradigm that aims to make historical research more accessible, more engaging, and increasingly more participatory. Symbolizing a broader public and participatory turn in the humanities, public history raises questions on the changing role of historians. In this presentation, I explore the multiple gains, but also the challenges, that public history practitioners are facing while developing collaborative and participatory projects. I will discuss the reasons that support broader collaboration, between different disciplines, as well as between professionals and non professionals to develop more inclusive and representative historical research. Interdisciplinary study, interpretation, and representation of the past – in particular through the collaboration between historians and artists – can help making history more accessible. As for co-creation with the broader public, I will show how applying citizen science approach can develop public participation further in historical research.
