Abstract:
It is rightly considered a hallmark of phenomenological philosophizing that everyday experiences areincluded. The art of describing such experiences is an essential aspect of the phenomenological method. However, in phenomenology after Husserl, approaches to image-oriented philosophizing were also developed, for example by Heidegger. Here, symbols and images of meaning are ascribed a philosophical function. Unlike concepts, such symbols are capable of explicating complex phenomena in an integrative way, so to speak.
For all major philosophical topics, it therefore makes sense not only to proceed conceptually, but also to be guided by symbols. Gaston Bachelard, influenced not only by phenomenology but also by Ludwig Klages and Carl Gustav Jung, was the first to try out such a method with regard to the elements fire, water, air and earth. The aim here is to follow on from him by looking at an old symbol for water that already appears in alchemical literature and is also widespread in non-European cultures - water as mother. Although this symbol is central to alchemical literature, Bachelard only touches on it briefly. However, an examination of this image is worthwhile and can reveal essential aspects of water.
