IN ENSEMBLE: A REHEARSAL
Villa Romana 2026 Fellows in dialogue with NICHE’s Research Community

Friday, 8 May 2026, 14:00–15:30
Room B, Ca’ Bottacin, Dorsoduro 3911, Calle Crosera, 30123 Venice

On the occasion of the opening of the 2026 Venice Biennale, Villa Romana (Florence) will present the research of its 2026 Fellows at NICHE Centre for Environmental Humanities (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice), through a public debate conceived as an ensemble: a shared space for listening, rehearsal and the production of situated knowledge.

By bringing together the artistic practices developed at the Artists’ Residency in Florence and the research conducted by the Centre for Environmental Humanities in Venice, the event explores how artistic and academic inquiries can evolve through relationship, reciprocity and ecological awareness. The Fellows’ projects address themes such as materiality, mutation, planetary change, vulnerability and transmission. In dialogue with the Environmental Humanities, these practices open up new perspectives on the interdependence between the human and non-human worlds.

This conversation is also reflected in the research Villa Romana is conducting on co-cultivation and speculative world-making, in which ecological thinking emerges not only as a theme but also as a method: through processes of care, growth, maintenance and attention.

Rather than focusing on individual perspectives, the event approaches research as a creative process that takes shape through difference, rhythm and forms of collective harmony. The ensemble becomes a means of reflection through shared yet situated practices, in which artistic research and Environmental Humanities come together as complementary modes of inquiry.

The event is organized by NICHE and Villa Romana, in collaboration with Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani, and aims to lay the foundations for future exchanges between artistic research, ecological thinking and experimental educational formats.
