Ayahuasca rituals with water: navigating illicitness after the ban in Italy

Abstract: This lecture explores the dynamics of lived religion, ritual change, agency, and shifting regulatory systems, focusing on how religions centred on the ritual use of the Amazonian psychoactive plant brew ayahuasca, adapt ritual forms and practices in the wake of its legal prohibition in Italy in 2022. Drawing on ethnographic research on the Santo Daime religion, this lecture analyses the impact of becoming illicit on devotees’ personal lives, alongside the ritual adaptations through which practitioners sustain religious practice and support legal claims for the recognition of their right to the ritual use of ayahuasca as a sacrament.
