Interview

1. Please provide a brief outline of your training and scientific activity.

I am an assistant professor at the Department of Computational Linguistics of the Institute for Bulgarian Language “Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. I have an MA in Bulgarian philology from St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University (with a minor in Turkish language and literature) and a PhD in general linguistics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

My research is focused on corpus linguistics (I am part of the research team working on the Bulgarian National Corpus and other corpora with a focus on Bulgarian), historical corpora with a focus again on the Bulgarian language, corpus annotation, diachronic syntax, language change. My current research mainly deals with the clitics in the history of the Bulgarian language. I am also part of the team working on the Bulgarian Wordnet and various other language resources that are being developed at the Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

I also teach Corpus Linguistics to MA students at the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University.

2. Please state your reasons for choosing Venice and the Department for your research and teaching stay.

I was invited by Prof. Iliyana Krapova from the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies  as we work on a project on Bulgarian as a Standard Average European language. Besides, the research at the Department and the University puts a focus on comparative linguistics and on (comparative) syntax which I am heavily interested in.

3. Have you ever had a research collaboration with the teaching staff of the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies in the past?

I have visited the Department a couple of times within a bilateral Erasmus contract and I have held lectures on Bulgarian language and Old Bulgarian / Old Church Slavonic and on the digital resources for studying the Bulgarian language, incl. comparatively and diachronically.
