Interview

1. Please provide a brief outline of your training and scientific activity.
I'm a historian and researcher at the Centre de recherches sur le Brésil colonial et contemporain (CRBC) at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris, where I am editorial director of  the journal Brésil(s). Sciences humaines et sociales. I defended my PhD at Univeristé de Paris 7 in 1994 under the supervision of Michelle Perrot on the men and women of the São Paulo elite in the 1920s. For over twenty years I have been working on the history of immigration, in particular that of Jews and Japanese in 20th century Brazil. I defended my Habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR) in 2013. My areas of specialization, on which I have mostly published, include the history of gender, cities and migration.

2. Please state your reasons for choosing Venice and the Department for your research and teaching stay.
I was invited by Professor Luis Fernado Beneduzi, who I respect and I thought it would be a very interesting experience to work and exchange with him and his colleagues. I lived for five years in Milano (1997-2002), when I worked at Università degli Studi di Milano. Since then I did not renew this experience. This is a very rich perspective for me.
3. Have you ever had a research collaboration with the teaching staff of Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies in the past?
Not in Venice, but I worked in a similar department in Milano for 2 years.
