Two Sides of the Coin: Differentiation and Integration in Network Effectiveness

A cura di Patrick Kenis, Visiting Scholar della Tilburg University.

Abstract
While most research on network collaboration emphasizes integration—aligning actors’ efforts—less is known about differentiation. This study explores both as dual dimensions of effective networks. Drawing on organization theory, we analyze functional differentiation (task division) and value differentiation (divergent actor priorities), using Crisp-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA) on 24 interorganizational networks in the Netherlands. We identify two effective configurations: one combines functional differentiation with integration; the other adds high value differentiation, strong consensus on shared values, and a network broker. Our findings show that integration and differentiation are two sides of the coin in network effectiveness.
