Abstract
Using a panel of 1,139 U.S. firms, the research examines whether CEOs’ early-career exposure to natural disasters influences asymmetric cost behavior during COVID-19. Firms led by disaster-exposed CEOs adjusted operating costs more strongly in response to sales declines, indicating a 24 percentage-point reduction in cost stickiness compared to control firms during the pandemic. These firms also held more cash and used more uncertainty-related language in MD&A disclosures, without a corresponding change in tone. The evidence indicates that early-career exposure to adverse events is associated with more aggressive cost management and lower operational slack during crises.
