Management Lectures | Paper Development Seminar by Marco Balzano, entitled "Speed of imitation over an industry’s technological evolution"

July 3, 2023 | h. 1pm
San Giobbe Economic Campus - Room Volpato

Abstract:
This study focuses on how the speed of imitation of technological innovations might vary depending on the level of technological uncertainty in the environment. Drawing from imitation theories and technological change literature, we contend that the speed of imitation is fostered during periods of technological stability, where uncertainty is relatively low, and dampened during periods of technological change, where uncertainty is higher. Moreover, we propose a set of hypotheses on the moderating role of imitator-, target-, and object-level variables. Using a unique database from the mobile phone industry, we perform a Cox proportional hazard model that lends support to our hypotheses. Based on these preliminary findings, a number of theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
