Abstract:
This lecture presents the potential of multiband imaging—UV, VIS, and IR in reflectance, transmittance, and luminescence modes, together with false-color composites—for revealing hidden information within paintings. Through an integrated reading of these techniques, we can uncover features invisible to the naked eye: conservation issues, structural elements, working processes, pentimenti, and material clues. Complementary references to X-radiography and infrared reflectography will also be included. Using case studies from the Middle Ages to the present, the session will show how scientific imaging unveils the internal history of artworks and expands the tools available for their documentation, interpretation, and preservation.

Bio sketch:
Miquel Ángel Herrero-Cortell is an art historian whose interdisciplinary background bridges fine arts practice, heritage conservation, and technical art history. He holds a BA in Fine Arts, a BA in Art History, and two Master’s Degrees—Artistic Production, and Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage—from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). He earned his PhD in Art History from the University of Lleida (2019), receiving international distinction and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. His research focuses on the material, technical, and procedural study of painting, integrating historical investigation, scientific imaging, and experimental reconstruction. He specializes in Technical Art History and in the application of multiband imaging, infrared reflectography, radiography, and other non-invasive imaging techniques to artworks from the late Middle Ages to the present. He is currently Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Universitat Politècnica de València.
