A recently published volume by Prof. Giovanni De Zorzi explores the tradition of Mugham

The book is entitled "Maqām: percorsi tra le musiche d'arte in area mediorientale e centrasiatica" (Maqām: Explorations of the Musical Arts in the Middle East and Central Asia).

The volume retraces the birth, evolution and spread of the Mugham tradition. The Arabic term "maqam" ("mugham" in Azerbaijani) defines a specific musical genre, which, despite being present across a vast territory spreading from Andalusia to western China, is characterised by consistent features and traits.
In this framework, a part of the volume is dedicated to the Mugham of Azerbaijan, and to its peculiar interrelationship with the musical repertoire of the "ashughs", or epic singers, which are usually exclusively connected to rural music contexts.
Prof. De Zorzi’s main research areas are the Ottoman and Central Asian traditions of classical and Sufi music. His interest in and cooperation with Azerbaijan dates back to 2008, when he participated with his ensemble in the Space of Mugham Festival. He collaborates regularly with the Ca' Foscari Baku Office, and in April 2019 he opened the concert "Water and Fire", which presented a repertoire of Baroque and Mugham pieces at the Azerbaijan State Academy Opera & Ballet Theatre.
