Paolo Calvelli
Physical technician

What do you do in your job at the department?
As a technician I take care of everything needed in the research laboratory for quantum optics and lasers, sometimes also the sputtering laboratory and two teaching laboratories, Physics and Physical Chemistry. More specifically, I take care of installations, modifications, repairs, finding the right equipment to order, and also part of the administrative procedure.

How has the Italian university, and Ca' Foscari specifically, evolved since you started your career?
Since 1991, when I was hired, the university in Italy has changed a lot: even the degree system has changed. For a technician, like me, the changes have been just as big. When I started working, my work was in the laboratory, I didn't deal with the administrative side of orders and meetings were very rare.
In the meantime, the university has tried, with some success, to reduce its impact on the environment wherever possible, such as by limiting the use of paper, differentiating waste collection, using more efficient lighting sources and encouraging employees to use public transport, even through agreements with public transport companies to simplify season ticket sales.

What is your favourite motto (saying, quote) that you apply in your job?
"He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask stays a fool forever."
