San Giobbe Campus

Venice School of Management is located in a very strategic position: the Economic Campus of Ca' Foscari University, at San Giobbe.

The campus is a 10-minutes walk from the train station, and 15 minutes from the parking lot of Piazzale Roma, where the bus station is located and all of the cars in Venice park. In addition, the School is very close to Strada Nova, a popular local shopping thoroughfare, with backstreets rich with shops selling crafts and vintage goods. Informal canal-side restaurants and bars line the nearby Fondamenta della Misericordia and Fondamenta dei Ormesini. The stately Ca’ d’Oro palace is in the neighborhood (just 15 minutes walk from the campus) and offers the chance to visit a unique collection of Renaissance art.

The Venice factor

Built on the waters of the lagoon, Venice is made up of 119 islands connected to each other by 150 canals and more than 400 bridges. The best known area of ​​Venice is the historic centre crossed by the Grand Canal, which divides it in half. Venice also includes a part of the mainland. 

The connection between the city centre and the mainland is via a 4-kilometre-long bridge. Furthermore, Venice includes the islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello, and the Lido.

One of the first things you notice when arriving in Venice are the toponyms, which represent a very independent ecosystem. Here are some keywords that will come in handy for finding your way around the city:

Calle: long and narrow street
Campo: square
Campiello: small square
Corte: courtyard
Fondamenta: street with one side facing a canal
Piazza: used only for Piazza San Marco
Rio Terà: road built over an underground canal
Sotoportego: part of the street that passes under buildings

The city is divided into 6 areas called Sestieri:
 

  • Dorsoduro: this area includes many places to visit, such as Campo Santa Margherita (the main square and the heart of student life), Gallerie dell’Accademia, Zattere (long fondamenta overlooking the Giudecca island), Church of Santa Maria della Salute, Museum of Punta della Dogana. Giudecca, the largest island in the Venetian lagoon, also belongs to this district.
  • Cannaregio: the northernmost part of the city, where the Venice School of Management Campus is located. Worth visiting: Jewish Ghetto, Lista di Spagna and Strada Nova (a long street from the railway station to Rialto, full of shops and commercial activities), Church of Madonna dell’Orto, Ca 'D'Oro, Campo Santi Apostoli.
  • San Polo: the smallest district, with the largest campo in the city. To visit: Rialto Bridge, Campo dell'Erbaria, Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
  • Santa Croce: the heart of Venice and the historic centre. To visit: Tolentini, Campo San Giacomo dall’Orio, Ca 'Pesaro - Museum of Modern Art, Calatrava Bridge, Church of San Stae.
  • San Marco: the most famous and symbolic area of ​​Venice. Worth visiting: St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, La Fenice Theatre, Campo Santo Stefano.
  • Castello: the largest district. To visit: Giardini della Biennale, Riva degli Schiavoni (long walk from San Marco to the Giardini), Arsenale, Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
