Wang Anyi was born in March 1954 in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. In 1976, she made her debut with the collection of essays Move forward! (Xiangqian jin). From then on, she began her career as an author of fiction and literary essays. In 1983, she participated in the Iowa International Writers’ Program. In 2013, she was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. In 2016, she won the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature. She is now a professor at Fudan University, the vice president of Chinese Writers Association, and the president of Shanghai Writers Association. Wang Anyi has published twelve novels including The Song of Everlasting SorrowsThe Age of EnlightenmentHeavenly Fragrance, and Anonymous. Her publications also include eight volumes of collected novellas, four volumes of short stories, numerous collections of essays and literary criticism, with a total length of more than six million Chinese characters. She has won many prestigious literary prizes: China’s national excellent children’s literature prize, the national short story prize, the national novella prize. Her novel The Song of Everlasting Sorrows, devoted to her city, Shanghai, was awarded some of the most important Chinese prizes for literature. Her writings have been translated into several languages. In 2011, her work was nominated for Man Booker International Prize.
