Margarethe von Trotta is one of the most important German and international film directors of the 20th and 21st century. After beginning her career as a theatre actress in the 1960s, she appeared in films by R. W. Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff.  She made her directorial debut with the latter, with Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, 1975, based on the novel by Heinrich Böll) and then with Das zweite Erwachen der Christa Klages (The Second Awakening of Christa Klages, 1978), followed by the multi-award-winning Die bleierne Zeit (Marianne and Juliane, 1981), a film about the years of terrorism that brought the director to the attention of international critics. The condition of woman and the social and political issues of her own country are of the the focus of her subsequent films. They include a film on Rosa Luxemburg (Die Geduld der Rosa L.1986), Fürchten und Lieben (Love and Fear, 1988), Die Rückkehr (The African Woman, 1990), Zeit des Zorns (The Long Silence, 1993), Rosenstrasse (2003), Hannah Arendt (2012), and a documentary about Ingeborg Bachmann (2018), a writer to whom she also dedicated the recent feature film, Ingeborg Bachmann–Reise in die Wüste (Ingeborg Bachmann– Journey into the Desert, 2023). She has been president of the Bif&st-Bari International Film Festival since 2017
