Entrepreneurial Leadership in Museums

Room Saraceno - Department of Management

The Management Lecture will be held by Dr Pegram Harrison - Saïd Business School, University of Oxford

Title: Entrepreneurial Leadership in Museums

Abstract:  “Entrepreneurial leadership” is a contested term in any context, perhaps even more so in museums. A current programme of research is looking at how the term is received and used by key stakeholders in UK national museums (i.e., receiving a high proportion of government funding) and university museums (i.e., closely affiliated with a major research university).  In each case, the preliminary findings indicate clearly that an entrepreneurial mindset, broadly conceived, is becoming increasingly important in the cultural sectors, even though there is only broad notional agreement as to the meaning of the term, and very little opportunity to develop such a mindset through the normal education and training programmes for the sectors.  Intended outcomes of the project include defining the concept more carefully, expanding the research into different practice areas, and designing learning opportunities to clarify management practice.

The Management Lecture will be followed by a PhD talk: "On the border: research challenges at the intersection of management and humanities".
