Process Mining: When Business Process Management Meets Data Science

Campus Scientifico via Torino - edificio ZETA, Sala Riunioni B

Fabrizio Maria Maggi, University of Tartu

Abstract:
Process mining can be seen as the "missing link" between data mining and business process management. Process mining techniques are able to extract knowledge from data logs commonly available in today’s information systems. These techniques provide new means to discover, monitor, and improve business processes in a variety of application domains. There are two main drivers for the growing interest in process mining. On the one hand, more and more data is being recorded, thus providing detailed information about the history of processes. On the other hand, there is a need to improve and support business processes in competitive and rapidly changing environments. In this talk, I will introduce my contribution to the process mining field conducted in the past 10 years. I will contextualize my work in the recent history of this family of techniques aiming at analyzing past executions of business processes to improve future performances.

Bio Sketch:
Fabrizio Maria Maggi received his PhD degree in Computer Science in 2010, and after a period at the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) research group - chaired by Prof. Wil van der Aalst - Eindhoven University of Technology, he is currently Associate Professor at the Information Systems Group - chaired by Prof. Marlon Dumas - University of Tartu. His research interest has focused in the last years on the application of data science to business process management.
He authored more than 100 articles on process mining, declarative and hybrid business process modeling, monitoring of business constraints at runtime, predictive monitoring, DMN decision tables for business process decision modeling.
