Emerging Threats in the Western Hemisphere: Climate Change
Campus Scientifico via Torino - edificio DELTA, Aula 1B
Prof. Daniel Suman, Department of Marine, Ecosystems, and Society, RSMAS, University of Miami
Abstract:
The seminar examines the contributions of Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) to global climate change and the impacts of these climate change factors on the LAC Region – particularly with respect to ecosystems, water resources, agriculture and food security, public health, and settlements. Vulnerability is the weakness of a region to adapt or respond to environmental change and is influencesd by numerous factors – geographical, socioeconomic, cultural, and political. The LAC Region appears to be particularly vulnerable to the impacts of global climate change despite its relatively small contribution to the climate change causes. The final part of the presentation will examine the climate change vulnerabilities faced by Miami, Florida (USA) – a quasi LAC city.
