Among the themes of the conference, emphasis will be placed on the presumed politicization of Israeli cinema. While some scholars argue that Israeli cinema is an instrument of political engagement, and a mirror of a politicized society, others stress its being an object of mass entertainment, progressively more detached from the debates of the political arena. Another focus of the proposed conference will be the progressive development of religious cinema in Israel and its impact on the construction of a political discourse that places religion at the core of Jewish and Israeli identity. We expect to publish the proceedings of this workshop in an edited volume of Jewish Film & New Media in 2018.
