Monday, 7 October, 2025 from 8.45 to 10.15
Classroom A, Ca’ Bottacin, and online via Zoom

Linguistic expressions are abstract objects with many levels of structure. Different choices as to which of these levels is to be represented graphically result in different writing systems and are made on the basis of a host of factors including the formal properties of the language and the political history of the speech community. This lecture provides an introduction to the Vietnamese writing system in light of these considerations. It consists of three parts. The first lays some theoretical groundwork. The second presents some basic features of the modern Vietnamese script. The third discusses the historical development of this script.
