TONG, Shijun
Professor of philosophy of East China Normal University (ECNU, since 1994) | Chancellor of Shanghai New York University (NYU Shanghai, since 2020)
Born in September 1958 in Shanghai, Tong obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECNU in early 1982 and late 1984, respectively, and his doctorate from the University of Bergen in Norway in the summer of 1994. Since December 1984, Tong has been teaching at ECNU. He has conducted visiting research at the Univer- sity of Marburg in Germany (1998) and Columbia Uni- versity in the United States (2000-2001). He has also served as the Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at ECNU (1995-1998), Director of the Institute of Philoso- phy at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS, 2009-2011), Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the SASS (2004-2011), and Secretary of the Party Com- mittee of ECNU (2004-2009). Tong has published more than ten books, including The Dialectics of Moderniza- tion: Habermas and the Chinese Discourse of Moderni- zation (2000), and has published over a hundred acade- mic papers, such as “How to Do Things with the Fact of Reason” (2024) as well as several translations, including Faktizität und Geltung: Beiträge zur Diskurstheorie des Rechts und des demokratischen Rechtsstaats (2003, 2014). Tong also serves as a member of the Social Scien- ce Committee of the Ministry of Education (since 2004), Editor-in-Chief of Philosophical Analysis (a bimonthly journal) (since 2010), and a Foreign Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, since 2011).
