Was Magic a Subversive Discourse in Antiquity?

This presentation revisits the presenter's research first developed nearly twenty years ago on the concept of magic, particularly curse tablets (katadesmoidefixiones) as a form of subversive discourse. Inspired by recent developments and ongoing discussions within the field of Ancient Magic, the paper re-examines these themes within the framework of Illicit Objects, Lived Religion: Materiality, Performance, and Power, offering a renewed perspective on the relationship between magical practices, materiality, and lived religion in the ancient world.
