Iconography of contemplating Buddha figure in Korea

Abstract

This lecture is a new study on the iconography of the contemplating Buddha figure, which referred to Sayu 사유 Buddha figure in Korea.
Especially, the Buddha images of National Treasure No. 78 and 83 were named as Bodhisattva Maitreya Sayu, which until now no one had interpreted on the basis of the sutra in Buddhism. I take two Buddhist sutras to interpret them, the first, the Sūtra of visualization on the Ascension of Bodhisattva Maitreya in the heavenly paradise Tusita (T452), second, the Doctrinal Essentials of the Sūtra on the Ascension of Maitreya (T1773/299). It was interpreted in my studies what the treasure crown of Bodhisattva figure No.78 means and why the two Bodhisattva figures smile so beautifully.
