From local case to transnational cause: A Korean’s death in the 1950s United States

Sala A - Ca’ Vendramin, Venezia

Justine Guichard, Paris Diderot University

Bio:
Justine Guichard is associate professor of Korean Studies at Université Paris Cité. She obtained a Ph.D. in political science from Sciences Po and Columbia University in 2014. Her research deals with contemporary Korean law and society, with a longstanding interest in constitutional politics and a new focus on faits divers, scandals, and affairs.

Abstract:
This talk investigates the homicide of In Ho Oh, a university student from South Korea killed in the street in 1958 Philadelphia. Rather than a whodunnit, the main puzzle to be solved lies in why and how this crime entered the US public space as a local case and then evolved into a transnational cause, becoming an object not only of attention but also of mobilization in both countries.
