Dr. Thea Sommerschield is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and CHS Fellow in Hellenic Studies at Harvard University. Her research uses machine learning to study the written cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world.
Thea graduated from her BA in Classics at the University of Pavia in 2015, and obtained a parallel MA in Humanities at the School for Advanced Study IUSS in 2016. She completed an MSt in Greek and Roman History with Distinction and a full scholarship at the University of Oxford in 2016. She went on to pursue a DPhil (PhD) in Ancient History with a full scholarship at the University of Oxford, which she completed in 2021. Her thesis was awarded the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Donnafugata award for the best doctoral dissertation on ancient Sicily.
In 2020, Thea was the Ralegh Radford Rome Awardee at the British School at Rome, and in 2021 she won a Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Fellowship (Horizon 2020) in Venice and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard’s Centre for Hellenic Studies.
Her research into the application of AI to the study of ancient history has been published at prominent venues (EMNLP, Cambridge University Press) and has attracted international media attention (The Times, NewScientist, Financial Times).
