A graduate in modern languages from Oxford University, David Newbold also holds postgraduate qualifications from the universities of Wales (TESOL) and Reading (Applied Linguistics).
He has more than twenty years experience of teaching English as a foreign language, especially at university level, at the Ecole Normale Superieure in France and at the universities of Venice and Verona. He is especially interested in language teaching methodology and testing, and has written numerous courses and tests for learners of English. He has presented at national and international conferences, in Italy, the UK, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Finland, France, Spain, Turkey, Bangladesh and China.
At Ca' Foscari he has been responsible  for the introduction of the Trinity College London-Ca' Foscari project in co-certification. In 2019 he was awarded membership honoris causa of Trinity College for his contribution to research in language testing and assessment.
Apart from language teaching methodology, he is also interested in contemporary varieties of English, and attitudes towards English as a lingua franca.
