Workshop: RETHINKING THE ARCHIVE IN CONTEMPORARY TIMES

Sala Milone, Malcanton Marcorà Dorsoduro 3484/D, Venezia

Rethinking the archive in contemporary times
Organized by Veronica Ferreri and Seçil Dagtas

We live in dark times. From environmental collapse and genocide to financial crises, the rise of fascism, and mass displacement, our present increasingly feels like a permanent state of emergency saturated by violent ruptures rather than ordinary times punctuated by discrete events. In reaction to these ruptures, the archive has gained novel significance across different contexts. Marginalized communities reconstitute their own archives to register systematic erasure and insistent survival, drawing sedimented histories and foreclosed futures into present crises. These archival formations emerge alongside novel approaches to historical archives—whether institutional, community or private—that recover lost histories and silenced presences. What these different practices share is not only the urgency of documentation, but also of reclaiming forms of existence, collectivities, lifeworlds, and knowledges in light of the temporal density of the present—always already entangled with multiple histories and futures, and itself on the verge of erasure. As the contemporary becomes the very ground on which archival practices are compelled and contested, it contributes to reshaping the meaning, form, and function of the archive itself.
