Saline Ecologies: Dissolving
A public Workshop at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

Sala Morelli
Malcanton Marcorà – Piano terra
Calle Contarini, Dorsoduro 3484/D,
Venezia

Workshop:

Saline Ecologies: Dissolving, the first event in the research project Saline Ecologies: artistic salt practices at the edges of body, object and land begins to think about the key question: “How can art practices which read sites where salt traces exist and indicate postcolonial realms of memory contribute to thinking about ecological futures?” The workshop, led by artist Alessio Mazzaro, will explore the topic of salt in buildings, bodies, and plants — reflecting on the skins of body and building, on porosity, and on how salinity can lead to either health and wellbeing or corrosion and death — through a conversation between engineer Vesna Pungercar and Doctor Massimo Cirillo on the use of salt in architecture and medicine. Part of the workshop will involve the collective creation of a conceptual map that draws out the conversation, to be used towards the wider project.

The event will be documented and recorded for research purposes. Open to all, with the conceptual mapping being of particular interest to students in the fields of linguistics, visual arts and anthropology.  Further events will be held at Hastings Contemporary in February 2027 and Teeside University in April 2027, followed by a conference in Brighton in June 2027.

Overall project info:

Saline Ecologies: artistic salt practices at the edges of body, object and land is an 18-month programme of events that explores how artistic and sensory practices with salt can offer interdisciplinary understandings of changing social, cultural and environmental ecologies. The conceptual framework of Saline Ecologies and edges offers an interdisciplinary understanding of ecologies, and ‘edges’ as the literal edges between land and water; other edges where salinity meets body/object/building; and also edges where different disciplines, concepts, places, pasts and presents, meet through salt. The programme is funded by a Curiosity Award from the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council and is a partnership between the University of Brighton, Teeside University, the New Institute Centre for Environmental Humanities (NICHE) at the Universita Ca’Foscari and Hastings Contemporary, a gallery in Hastings, UK. The project is led by Dr Katy Beinart at the University of Brighton and Catherine Bertola at Teeside University.
