FILM FESTIVAL | The Material Cloud

Casa del Cinema Salizada San Stae, 1990 Venezia

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie project LIBRA supported by NICHE promotes The Material Cloud Film Festival.

A nomad three-night cinematic journey that explores the human and environmental costs of artificial intelligence (AI). After the first successful edition in Stockholm (Sweden) in March-April 2026, the festival is landing in Venice (Italy), hosted by Casa del Cinema between October and November 2026.
As AI continues to expand into every sector of society, the festival invites audiences to question, "what lies behind the initial sleek interfaces and cloud-based conveniences?". Through the medium of film, an urgent conversation arises regarding the need to explore the material realities, ethical dilemmas, and global controversies shaping today’s technological frontier.
Each screening features a carefully selected film that illuminates a different dimension of AIs. From resource extraction to labour issues, to vested interests, power concentration, and geopolitical tensions. Following every screening, the audience will be invited to listen to invited experts from academia and civil society, offering an opportunity to unpack what lies behind the cloud.
All screenings are open to everyone and free of charge.
Doors opening at 18.30, film screening at 19.00.

5 November 2026 | In the belly of AI

The third screening will close the festival on November 5th. “In the Belly of AI” (72’, France, 2025)  is a journey inside the trauma and experience of the invisible workers feeding algorithms. The movie questions what the future promised by technology implies for the emotional health of those training the models and at what environmental and governance cost these innovations are transforming our world.

The festival is created and curated by Dr. Francesca Larosa, PI of the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodoska-Curie LIBRA project (Grant n. 101150729). In Venice, Italy, the festival is supported by the NICHE Centre for Environmental Humanities. In Stockholm, Sweden, the festival has received support from the KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory, the Swedish Red Cross, ForumCiv, Digital Futures and the Centre for Anthropocene History.
