Ronni Pavan (University of Rochester) - Dynamic Spillovers in the Workplace (with Nathaniel Baum-Snow, Nicolas Gendron-Carrier and Josh Kinsler)

Abstract:

In this paper, we examine how coworker complementarities and learning in the workplace shape wage dynamics. Using administrative matched employer–employee data from the Veneto Work History (VWH) and an extension of the estimator introduced by Arcidiacono et al. (2012), we estimate contemporaneous and lagged spillovers within and across occupations. We find strong contemporaneous peer effects among blue-collar workers, while effects among white-collar workers are smaller. Cross-occupation spillovers are asymmetric: white-collar wages respond to the skills of their blue-collar coworkers, but the reverse channel is limited. Lagged peer effects are modest, whereas lagged firm effects are more persistent and quantitatively important, particularly for white-collar workers. Dynamic effects are strongest for workers who remain with the same employer, but a meaningful share carries over across jobs. We also show that commonly used post-estimation approaches can substantially understate dynamic spillovers, underscoring the importance of estimating these effects within a unified framework.
