Greg Wellenius (Boston University & Harvard School of Public Health) - Building Resilience to Extreme Heat: Bridging the Gap between Academic Research and Real-World Action

Abstract:

Despite an abundance of epidemiological evidence recognizing extreme heat as a severe public health threat, progress toward preventing heat-related illnesses and deaths remains remarkably limited. This presentation addresses the critical disconnect between academic research findings and actionable public health policy. Dr. Wellenius outlines current research initiatives—leveraging interdisciplinary partnerships, healthcare claims data, and novel digital signals—aimed at translating scientific data on heat risk, differential vulnerability, and the effectiveness of early warning systems into targeted, real-world interventions that protect vulnerable frontline communities and help build climate resilience.
