Jan Von Plato (University of Helsinki), “A Kind of Platonism, Which Does not Satisfy any Critical Mind”. A Gödelian Puzzle in the Philosophy of Mathematics

Abstract:
Philosophers of mathematics have been puzzled by a 1933 remark of Gödel’s, in his The present situation in the foundations of mathematics, by which “our axioms, if interpreted as meaningful statements, necessarily presuppose a kind of platonism, which cannot satisfy any critical mind.” That claim seems to stand in flat contradiction to Gödel’s later strong realist view of the axioms of set theory. An explanation is provided by a recently found early manuscript version of Gödel’s essay.

All meetings will be held online, with the exception of the first session, which will be hybrid (in person and online). To receive the Zoom link, please send a message to matteo.vagelli@unive.it.
