The course is one of those characterizing the CdS in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage, and aims to provide students with the first methodological tools for the interpretation of archaeological contexts of the Roman world.
The aim of the course is to provide the basic elements of the history of archeology and Roman art from Augustus to Late Antiquity to students who are interested in the knowledge of history, literature and the figurative and architectural culture the Roman world.
1. Knowledge and understanding
- Know the basic archaeological and technical terminology
- To know the bases and the foundations of the chronological framing of the Roman world
- Know the main theoretical reference models for the analysis of Roman art and architecture
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- Know how to properly use basic archaeological terminology
- Knowing how to make chronological references for the Roman world
- Know how to operate a simple analysis of aspects of artistic culture of the Roman world
3. Ability to judge
- Know how to formulate and argue simple hypotheses on Roman archeology issues.
4. Communication skills
- Know how to communicate aspects of Roman archaeological heritage, with appropriate terminology
5. Learning skills
- Knowing how to critically consult the reference texts and the bibliography contained in them.
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the main elements that characterize the history of Roman art and architecture, to acquire a basic terminology, and to insert the data in the broader field of Imperial Rome.
General prerequisites are assessed, such as knowledge of a good geographical and historical knowledge of ancient Rome.
History of Roman art and architecture from Late-Republican times to the Late-Antique: public art and architecture (State reliefs, imperial fora), art and policy in the imperial period.

The exam is in oral form: for the students that attend the course the exam consists of some questions on the lecture notes and on one of the handbooks. A basic knowledge of the history of Roman art and architecture, a correct terminology and an updatad methodology are requested.
