The course is one of those characterizing the CdS in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage, and aims to provide students with the first methodological tools for the interpretation of archaeological contexts of the Greek world.
The aim of the course is to provide the basic elements of the history of archeology and Greek art from the beginning of the archaic period to the end of Hellenism to students who are interested in the knowledge of history, literature and the figurative and architectural culture the Classical world.
1. Knowledge and understanding
- Know the basic archaeological and technical terminology
- To know the bases and the foundations of the chronological framing of the Greek world
- Know the main theoretical reference models for the analysis of Greek art and architecture
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- Know how to properly use basic archaeological terminology
- Knowing how to make chronological references for the Greek world
- Know how to operate a simple analysis of aspects of artistic culture
3. Ability to judge
- Know how to formulate and argue simple hypotheses on Greek archeology issues.
4. Communication skills
- Know how to communicate aspects of classical archaeological heritage, with appropriate terminology
5. Learning skills
- Knowing how to critically consult the reference texts and the bibliography contained in them.
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the main elements that characterize the history of Greek art and architecture, to acquire a basic terminology, and to insert the data in the broader field of classical Greek culture.


General prerequisites are assessed, such as knowledge of a good geographical and historical knowledge of ancient Greece.
Introduction to the history of Greek art and architecture in Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic ages: art, architecture, town-planning.
Lecture notes. G. Bejor, M. Castoldi, C. Lambrugo, Arte greca dal decimo al primo secolo a.C., Mondadori, Milano 2008, or later editions. Alternative handbook: Storia Oxford dell’arte classica, J. Boardman ed., Laterza, Bari 1995, or later editions, pp. 1-216.
The exam is in written form: for the students that attend the course the exam consists of questions on the lecture notes and on the handbook. A basic knowledge of the history of Greek art and architecture, a correct terminology and an updatad methodology are requested.
