The teaching falls within the integrative training activities of the three-year degree course in Chemistry and Sustainable Technologies. The course allows students to acquire knowledge and understanding of topics related to the study of colloidal systems and their use in formulation technology. The course aims to address some issues related to the formulation in modern industry. The student will have the opportunity to become acquainted with various examples of formulations in the detergent, pharmaceutical and food industries, and with examples of formulations for cosmetic products, paints, fuels and catalysts. The student will be able to address an industrial/technological problem in its various aspects and learn an appropriate use of the current technical-scientific language. The main objective will be to understand the role of the formulation in the preparation of the different chemical specialties. In particular, it will i) stimulate the use of a logical and deductive reasoning in the resolution of these problems; ii) develop the ability to expose scientific concepts in a formal manner.
1. Knowledge and understanding of:
a) basic concepts of colloidal systems chemistry;
b)principles of rheology;
c) concept of surface tension, wettability, contact angle;
d) study of dispersed systems (dispersions, emulsions, foams);
e) stability and instability of dispersed systems;
f) examples of formulation in the detergent, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, paints, fuels and catalysts industries.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
a) Knowing how to exploit the learned knowledge to solve some problems related to the modern formulation with a logical-deductive reasoning;
b) Knowing how to do a literature search.
3. Ability to judge
To know how to evaluate the effectiveness of different formulation approaches.
4. Communication skills
a) Knowing how to formulate appropriate questions during the lessons
b) Knowing how to use an appropriate vocabulary and a suitable technical-scientific symbolism.
5. Learning skills
a) Knowing how to be adequately autonomous in carrying out literature search;
b) Knowing how to take notes in an appropriate way.
Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, mathematics.
Colloidal systems and interfaces. In particular, we will talk about dispersed systems such as: emulsions, microemulsions, multiple emulsions, foams and dispersions. We will study how to prepare and stabilize an emulsion, a micro emulsion and a multiple emulsion. We will study the phenomena that lead to the destabilization of these dispersions such as flocculation, coagulation, etc. Foams and their stabilization or destabilization will be studied. Formulation and properties of colloidal suspensions and dispersions, stabilization and destabilization, study of the zeta potential, double electric layer, DLVO theory. Rheology: basic principles, viscosity of dispersions and emulsions Examples of formulations in the detergent, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, paints, fuels and catalysts industries etc...

3. Lesson notes

The examination consists of an oral test. The student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics and how to expose them in a formal way. The oral exam consists of a series of questions concerning the program. The oral exam lasts from 30 to 45 minutes. To pass the exam, they are required: active participation in the lessons and at the laboratory and of course the knowledge of the topics.

Teaching is organized in classroom lectures. In the "moodle" platform of the University, educational material will be available (pdf of presentations projected in the classroom). Laboratory experiences will be held in the Industrial Chemistry laboratory
