The course is divided into three parts: the first one aims to give some basic tenets of the Muslim civilization as it has been developing the in Mediterranean area.
The second one analyses the relationship/conflict between Sunni and Shia communities.
The third one deals with gender issues in the area.
This course is designed to familiarize students with some basic dynamics of Muslim civilization in the Mediterranean and beyond
Students are expected to gain insights into the ways in which these dynamics shape the social, cultural and political life in the area.
Different profiles will be considered by teacher in accordance with the criteria followed for MIM admissions.
Good knowledge of English and French is essential
A) Introduction to Islam
How to study Islam: some guidelines against past and present Eurocentrism, orientalism and racism.
The tenets of Islam.

B) Sunnism and shiism
History of a division. Myths and reality of a non religious problem

C) gender issues
Developments of Muslim women’s battles for their rights
Not only women : masculinity and Islam
The LGBTQ question and Muslim societies
