The aim of this course is to provide students with theoretical and applied knowledge on business economics and general management. A special emphasis is placed on the strategic management of the firm by providing students with basic knowledge of i) the relationship between the firm and its external environment ii) the analysis of the competitive environment ii) the creation and management of the competitive advantage.
Attendance and active participation in the training activities proposed by the course and individual study will enable students to:

- demonstrate an understanding of and familiarity with the world of business and its terminology.
- understand and analyze a wide range of firms’ strategies and managerial decisions
- understand the main tools of competitive analysis
- apply models and tools to interpret the competitive environment in which firms operate and effectively analyze the resulting strategic challenges

What is a firm?
The horizontal and vertical boundaries of the firm
Understanding external environment: micro and macro environment
Tools for competitors' identification
The analysis of the industry attractiveness
The analysis of the competitive advantage
Business strategies: differentiation, cost leadership and blue oceans
Corporate strategies: diversification
Corporate strategies: vertical integration
As for the exam preparation, various documents in digital format will be available to be downloaded at the link “Moodle”. Study materials include both scientific articles and the slides presented in class by the instructor.
Written exam, with a mix of open-ended and multiple-choice questions.
