"Reading, seeing / experimenting, knowing": cognitive models and rhetorical structures of the encyclopedic description in the vernacular literature in the Middle Ages.
The course aims to study a specific problem of medieval encyclopedism (the dialectic between "auctoritas" of book knowledge and direct experience of things), starting from the textual solutions (and therefore the rhetorical articulation) provided by the vernacular tradition. The main objects of the investigation will be the travel texts between the 13th and 15th centuries, and the "Tresor" by Brunetto Latini.
Knowledge:
- medieval rhetorical instrumentation in the context of the "descriptio";
- vernacular travel literature;
Skills:
- strengthening of linguistic and rhetorical awareness;
- acquisition of anthropological and cognitive modeling.
Basic knowledge of Old French, of the Latin language.
Theory and practice of "descriptio";
history of travel literature;
lines of anthropological reflection on the alterity of cultures.
Bibliography and texts provided before the lessons.

During the exam the topics and texts treated in class will be discussed.
The course will take place according to traditional methods.
Italian
In the first and second term one seminar will be organized, that shall concern Dante and gallo-romance literary tradition; it shall be opened to anyone (of the Undergraduate/Graduate course) who may be interested. The only prerequisite is the engagement to autonomously translate the texts that will be entrusted to the individual exercise during the seminar. Attendance at the seminar guarantees 6 Stage-CFU.
