A part of the Master's Degree Programmes in European, American and Postcolonial Language and Literature and Language Sciences, this course is intended for students interested in acquiring a detailed knowledge of the cultural and literary history of Jugoslavia in the 20th century through works by Ivo Andrić. The course will give an exhaustive picture of various spheres of Andrić's literary activity contextualizing his role as writer and diplomat in the history of the three (or, according to some, five) Yugoslavias.
At the end of the course the student will know how to:
- correctly use the philological and historical-cultural terminology in the main areas in which the teaching is organized;
- orientate oneself in the critical debate on studied topics, in order then to formulate hypotheses on various issues of the discipline;
- communicate the contents of the course in a clear and technically adequate manner, using the register relevant to the communicative situation;
Basic knowledge of European history of the 20th century and geography of the Balkans.
This monographic course, dedicated to the work of Ivo Andrić (1892-1975), will illustrate various areas of the written production of the only Nobel of the South Slavic literatures. The lessons will follow Andrić's literary activity chronologically: we will start with poetic works (poems and lyrical prose) to arrive, through essays, to stories and novels. Through gradual and guided readings, students will be able to identify the peculiarities of Andrić's style and the main features of his poetics.
Some of the topics dealt with: the biography of Andrić in the historical context (his active participation in the key moments of the 20th century Yugoslavia); the poetic debut; the activity of literary critic; travel stories and diplomatic work; the evolution of the narrative art of Andrić (the stories and their cycles); the great novels of 1945; "The devil's court" as a perfect art-work; on the story and the story telling - the poetics of Andrić.
