The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge to understand the mechanisms of economic development, with particular attention to the role of technological innovation and institutional structures in the long run growth. Part of the course will be devoted to the implications of digital technologies for industrial organisation, firm competitiveness and innovation policies.
Students will be put in a position to critically read the models and the different measures of the economic development. In the first part of the course the fundamentals of macro-economic accounting will be recalled. Students will also be introduced to the history of economic thought and to the most recent theoretical contributions that have studied the implications of innovation for long run growth. Finally, the course will allow student to understand the dynamics at the firm, industry and country level related to innovation.
It is necessary for the student to know the basic elements of micro-economics.
