The knowledge of how to protect themselves and others from risks and hazards in the
chemical lab (or in workplaces) is of paramount importance, given the
number of lab practicing course the students have to attend. Following
the course and passing the final test is a precondition to follow any
practical lab courses, for safety reasons.
As a consequence, the course (mandatory) is held typically every year before the
beginning of first year's chemistry labs.
Part of the course will be held in on-line mode.
1. Knowledge and comprehension
a) students are expected to know the essential italian legislation on occupational safety and how is to be applied to chemical lab hazards.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension
a) students must be familiar with personal and collective protection devices to be utilized in all various types of chemical workups;
b) students must be familiar with safety procedures to be utilized in all various types of chemical workups.
3. Ability in management
a) students must be able to identify hazardous situations and apply working procedures and protection devices enabling safety in various contexts.
4) Ability of communicate
a) students must be able to understand safety instructions both in written and oral form;
b) students must show communication abilities on safety matters in the correct technical terms.
5) Ability to learn
a) students must know how and were to retrieve and refer to documents and legislation about the chemical hazards (safety data sheets, IARC lists etc).
No preceding knowledge of the matter is required.
Legislation in Work Safety, prevention and protection.
Physical hazards, protective equipments.
Chemical hazards: fire, fire prevention, fire-fighting equipment, emergency management.
Chemical hazards: explosion, chemical contamination.
Biological hazards.
Lab accidents cases and examples.
Texts of Laws and Regulations; PowerPoint slides of lesson topics made available by the teacher.
The final examination is a test with a number of questions to be answered (closed question, multiple answer).
Classroom lectures with PowerPoint presentation of the material.
