The course falls within the courses offered for the Bachelor Degree [LT40] in Language, culture and society of Asia and Mediterranean Africa. This is a two-term course on basic Mandarin Chinese, with two modules divided into two semesters. The course is one of the core educational activities for the "Japan" and "Korea" curricula. Its formative objectives are within the area of language skills learning. It aims at providing students with knowledge of basic grammatical structures, and with skills in simple communicative situations (A1 level of the CEFR).
Through the attendance of the course and individual study students will achieve a level of language proficiency equivalent to level A1- of the CEFR (Common European framework of reference for language proficiency). In particular, students will:

1. Knowledge and understanding
- Get to know the pronunciation of modern standard Chinese.
- Get to know the rules for writing characters and understand their structures, as well as recognize their main components.
- Get to know and understand about 300 characters and 350 words (active competence).
- Get to know basic grammatical structures.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- Articulate the sounds of modern standard Chinese
- Write correctly Chinese characters.
- Interact in simple communicative situations.

3. Communication skills
- Be able to communicate the specificities of very basic linguistic analysis using appropriate terminology.
Basic knowledge of Chinese characters.
Chinese language mod.1 is a prerequisite to this course.
The course provides students with an overall knowledge, at an elementary level, of written and spoken modern Chinese. The main focus will be different communicational contexts, especially daily conversations.

This is a two-term course. The final exam takes place at the end of the second semester, with a test aimed at verifying grammatical analysis and communication skills. The first term is propaedeutic to the second. Final mark is calculated on the basis of single term's marks (matematical average).
For the academic year 2020/21, students will have to pass both modules within the first round of exams in January 2022, respecting the exam's propaedeuticity. After this deadline, both exams will have to be taken again.
The test is 40 minutes long, and verifies acquisition of units 1-12 of the textbook, as well as on the materials provided by the teacher (available on Moodle - https://moodle.unive.it/ - among the materials associated with the course "Lingua cinese mod. 2 [LT005I] - prof. Daniela Rossi). Excercises include: translation of sentences (Italian to Chinese and vice versa), filling gaps, reordering of constituents, Pinyin transcription (with tones), matching words and their meaning.
