SOCIOLOGY OF MIGRATIONS AND INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS

The course introduces the study of migration and intercultural relations in the contemporary world aiming to achieve the following objectives: provide basic knowledge of the multiple causes of migration in modern and contemporary age; provide in-depth knowledge of the dimensions, shapes and effects of contemporary migrations in Europe and Italy; provide the student with basic skills and abilities to apply in studies and social work.

At the end of the course the student:
- has knowledge of the main conceptual tools necessary for studying the migration phenomenon, provided by most recent and advanced studies;
- has a general framework of migration in Europe and social, political and cultural processes related to it;
- is able to formulate the contents of the course, to use properly the current terminology in the field of migration and intercultural relations, to argue in public debate on migration and intercultural relations, provide examples to support or refute a hypothesis of analysis;
- is able to collect information, provide analysis and interpretations by applying acquired knowledge, providing relevant examples, built autonomously;
- is able to communicate and interact with different audiences.

There are not pre-requirements.

The historical and contemporary causes of migration.
Globalization and international migration.
Migrations in Europe: migration policies, social conditions of migrants, open issues.
Main aspects of immigration in Italy: presence, work, health, migration policies, female migration, xenophobia and racism.
Asylum seekers and reception.
Culture, cultures, cultural pluralism, multiculturalism.

The evaluation will be based on a written exam. Three groups of tracks are provided and students develop a track for each group. Points assigned for each track: from 0 to 4.
