The course is part (1) of the core educational activities of the Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Chemistry and Technology and in Technologies for the Conservation and the Restoration and it allows the students to acquire the basic knowledge and the understanding of some aspects concerning the Physical Chemistry.
This Course aims to provide theoretical basic elements of Chemical Thermodynamics, including some essential principles at the atomic-molecular level. The students will learn to apply such a knowledge to simple chemical problems, mainly about phase or reaction equilibria.
The study of thermodynamics is necesary not onlly to understand some general natural laws, but also to learn how to develop a logical sceintific reasoning.
The aim of the course is to give the elements to understand th phase and the chemical equilibria.
The course i divided in two parts:
1) 48 hours Classical Thermodynamics
2) 12 hours Statistical Thermodynamics
1. Knowledge and understanding
To know and to be familiar with:
a) the properties and the state functions of a system.
b) the correspondence among the state functions.
c) chemical equilibria.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Ability to use state functions such as Internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy in order to define a system. To calculate some chemical physics quantities of real systems.
To explain chemical equilibria in terms of thermodynamics.

3. Judgment skills
Ability to evaluate, in a reasoned manner, experimental results associated to surfaces or colloidal systems.

4. Communication skills
To use in an appropriate way the terminology and the symbolism learnt during the course.
To interact with the teachers and the classmates in a dynamic, effective and proper way,

5. Learning ability
To take notes during classes in a proper way, evidencing the topics according to their importance

It is necessary for the students to know the theoretical foundations and basic applications of the differential and integral calculus, the kinematics, the dynamics and general chemistry.
The course contents can be summarized as follows:
Part 1 Classical Thermodynamics
The laws of Thermodinamics: first, second and third principle. The chemical potential. Change of states. Solutions. Chemical affinity. Equilibrium.

Part 2 Statistical Thermodynamics (Classical)
The distribution of molecular states, Th einternal Energy and The Entropy, The canonical Partition Function.
