The course is part of the Master in Chemistry and Sustainable Technologies, curriculum in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials and runs in the second semester of the second year. The course aims at giving students the first rudiments of solid state, from chemical bonds, to crystalline structure, to motion of atoms and electrons in solids, and related electronic, optical and thermal properties.
At the end of the course, the students have learned the fundamental principles of solid state, related to the atomic and electronic structure in crystals.
The students will be able to correlate physical and chemical phenomena typical of the solid state with mathematical models describing them.
The students will be able to predict behavior of different types of materials from different points of view (thermal, electronic, optical) depending on their electronic and crystalline structure.
Prerequisite to attend the course successfully is the basic knowledge of mathematics, general physics, and general chemistry.

The knowledge on the content of the course will be assessed through an oral examination, which will include questions both on theory and examples.
The course will include classes and description of selected examples, whose principles were described during the classes.
