Part of the core teaching in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management, the course is designed for students enrolled in the curricula “Performative Arts” and “ Arts Management”. As a rule, the students enrolled in the curricula "Art History" and "Archaeology" cannot be admitted in this course: another course is dedicated to them.

This teaching unit offers 6 credits and is the first part of a 12-credit course. The second part of the course ("FUNDAMENTALS OF CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, IIb", FT0451, Prof. Erri) is taught in the fourth term. The final score will be the average of the evaluation scored in the first and in the second part of the course. It is preferable to take the examination for the first part of the course BEFORE the examination for the second part.
Awareness of the different forms of museum, art collection and accumulation developed from the fifteenth century onwards, especially in Europe and in America.

Basic notions about the current display criteria in museums.

Ability to critically present the fundamental concepts and key moments of the theoretical discourse about museums; awareness of the historical background of these concepts.

None
It provides basic notions concerning the history of collections and museums, and introduces the participants to the key concepts of museum studies. Cultural history is here considered with a concentration on cultural heritage, with special regard to the institutions of preservation.

The course has two sections:

- key concepts of the museum practice and the museological debate;

- exemplary cases of art accumulations and art museums (15th to 21st century).
Assigned readings
(the use of subsequent editions and reprints is always admitted)

- Maria Teresa Fiorio, Il museo nella storia: dallo studiolo alla raccolta pubblica, Bruno Mondadori, Milano 2011, or Pearson, Torino 2018 (only chapters I-X included, without the introduction; in the 2011 edition, these chapters correspond to pp. 9-183).

- Pietro C. Marani, Rosanna Pavoni, Musei: trasformazioni di un'istituzione dall'età moderna al contemporaneo, Marsilio, Venezia 20123 (only chapters 2-5 included and 7-9 included, and the first three final entries (Galleria degli Uffizi, Museo Vaticani, Louvre; in the 2012 edition, these chapters correspond to pp. 23-57, 65-93, 110-114).

- Lucia Cataldo, Marta Paraventi, Il museo oggi. Linee guida per una museologia contemporanea, Hoepli, Milano 2007, pp. 70-71, 96-112, 138-141, 148-156, 159-161 (corresponding to chapters 8.1-8.2 included; 10.3.2-10.5.3 included; 11.4.2-11.4.3 included; 12.1-12.4.3 included, but without the “Scheda 2”).

Non-attending students shall prepare NO additional readings and are NOT requested to contact the teacher in order to be authorized. Instead of attending the online classes, they will follow the recorded lessons made available on the moodle platform.
The final in-class exam (a moodle quiz lasting 110 minutes and managed without the use of the SEB software) consists of open-answer questions. These questions require a critical rethinking of the notions learned. They assess the students' understanding of the topics discussed in class and considered in the assigned readings. Plagiarism implies the immediate invalidation of the proof. Exchange of information with others is not allowed during the proof.

The final note is based 100% on the answers to the online quiz. The score corresponding to each question will be indicated in the quiz.
Frontal teaching through zoom video conferences and additional materials made available on moodle (http://moodle.unive.it ). The students who cannot attend the online conferences shall follow their recordings on moodle.

The development of the governmental pandemic measures and of the university policies may cause changes in the teaching and assessment methods, independently from the teacher’s will. Up-to-date information will be provided during the first class.
Moodle’s blackboard is the official channel for every announcement concerning the organization of the course. All the participants are requested to sign in the moodle course.
