Firstly, the course will focus on the origins of this distinctive Venetian art. Venetian glass has been, in fact, mentioned in documents since the 10th century but it probably goes back to Roman times. Some blown vessels of exceptional interest, enamel decorated, housed in different international museums, date back to the 13th century, proving the interaction between Venice and the Levant.

Secondly, the course focuses on the most important period of glass art: the Renaissance, starting from 1450. From that age to the end of the 16th century new refined techniques, which characterize Murano glassblowing also today, were invented and developed and, above all, the peculiar Venetian style became evident. It spread all over Europe thanks to several glassworks which produced glass à la façon de Venise.

Finally, the course will deepen the theme of research opportunities. Despite being internationally renowned, in fact, Venetian Art Glass has not always been studied. As a consequence, there are plenty of topics to be examined further, for instance:
• the development of shapes and decoration
• the influence of Chinese porcelain and Islamic decorative art
• the demand of excellent costumers
