GERMAN LITERATURE 2

This is a core course in the Bachelor's degree programme in LCSL (60 hours lesson time and 12 CP). It shares the general objectives of the mentioned Bachelor's degree programme within the area of German Literature.

The expected learning outcomes are:
1. Knowledge and understanding: A detailed knowledge of the German literature and history of the 19th century until the age of William II;
2. Knowledge and understanding applied: The course will enhance the student's skills in textual translation and comprehension, in textual analysis, in understanding historical and cultural contexts, and in the acquisition of a critical language. Students are expected to become acquainted with language skills for Level B2/B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for the learning of languages (CEFR).
4. Making judgements: Ability to express a personal and original position on literary texts.

Students must have attended the classes of German Literature 1 and of German language 1 (LT0052)

Restless lives in German long 19th Century

The course offers an overview, from a literay perspective, of the century Eric Hobsbawn called the long 19th century, at the beginning of which the modern subject emerging in the Enlightment comes to term with the highs and lows of self-determination and emancipation. From this point of view we will read Goethe’s Faust I (and some pages in particular), some works by Heinrich von Kleist, E.T.A. Hoffmann, J. von Eichendorff, H. Heine, G. Büchner, Th. Storm and G. Hauptmann.

The final oral exam will cover all material from class and assigned readings. Students are expected to be proficient in translating, understanding and critically analysing the texts given in the syllabus. In order to do so, when taking the exam, students are requested to have on hand the novels indicated in the primary sources. Students will be also asked to talk about a topic of the course in German.

Front lessons. The students’ active participation in class will be encouraged.

Students are required to have and read the books by the beginning of the course in order to enjoy an active participatione in class.
