The course of Portuguese and Brazilian Literature 2 MOD 1 is common to all the curricula available in the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Language, Civilisation and the Science of Language.
The course aims to provide an overview of poetry in a period of time from medieval Iberian lyric to the Renaissance, with particular attention to the metaphor of the heart and then verify some permanence and transgressions in the poetry and songs of the twentieth century, through the works of Amália Rodrigues and Vinicius de Moraes.
1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the Portuguese lyric, with particular study of the development of the metaphor of the heart in Portuguese and Brazilian poetry of the twentieth century in dialogue with the previous Portuguese poetry. Knowledge of socio-cultural and historical-political dynamics that affect literary production; ability to understand the importance of music for the poetic phenomenon; ability to understand some of the main songs of Portuguese and Brazilian cultures both in terms of content and in terms of their socio-cultural, literary and artistic implications.
2. Applied knowledge and understanding: applying the knowledge acquired to the context of poetry in the historical-cultural, literary and political framework in which they were produced.
3. Autonomy of judgement: ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools in the analysis of poetry and songs indicated, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also putting them in relation to the context.
4. Communicative skills: understanding the exposition of an academic discourse; knowing how to present in a clear and coherent way a studied problem; knowing how to express concepts with clarity and terminological precision.
5. Ability to learn: learning how to recognise poetic genres and its relationship with music; learning to think about the meaning of metaphors in a more complex way.
Basic knowledge of European history and culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The course is developed in two parts; a first dedicated to the use of the metaphor of the heart based on María Zambrano's thinking in a time span that runs from medieval Iberian opera to the Renaissance; a second that will be dedicated to the works of two of the most representative composers and singers of Portuguese and Brazilian music - Amália Rodrigues and Vinícius de Moraes. In the first segment, an in-depth study will be dedicated to the main authors, themes, movements and to the three canonical genres of medieval Iberian lyrics - the cantiga d'amigo, the cantiga di amore and the cantiga "d'escarnho e maldizer", also to the Palatial poetry and its influences on Camões. In the second segment a part of the work of Amália Rodrigues and Vinícius de Moraes will be analysed, framing them both in the historical context of the literary movements and in the musical context. It will be provided: information on the authors and a critical perspective summary beyond texts in full version or anthology that will also be examined on the basis of the information already given.

Other specific bibliography will be provided during the course.
The exam will be an oral interview (consisting of three questions), in Italian in which the student's ability to read and analyse a passage taken from a text from the bibliography will be tested. All parts of the program will be considered fundamental.
The exam aims to verify the knowledge of the topics covered in the course; the understanding of the works studied, the understanding of the concepts and the quality of the exhibition and the ability to develop judgments in establishing and relationships between the topics presented during the course.
The course will be divided into lectures and literary translation laboratories for an in-depth study of the linguistic-cultural aspects of the texts analysed during the various meetings. The course deals with literature in an interdisciplinary way; multimedia materials will be used in addition to the bibliography, such as interviews and documentaries.
